Subject: Re: File System Full, bdf, and du
Date: 1 Feb 1994 02:44:12 GMT
Organization: the HP Response Center, Atlanta
: I've got "File System Full" message from Remote Watch. And I
: tried to cleanup some files under /tmp, /usr/tmp. But the capacity
: still showed 105%. Then I found out that when I typed "du -x", the
: size shown was much smaller than the size shown using "bdf".
: Finally I decided to reboot the system and tried "bdf" again, it
: dropped to 84% and both "bdf" and "du" looked consistent. Why is
: that? Do "bdf" and "du" refer to different sources? How can I fix
: the problem without rebooting the system?
Are you using filesystem swap? If so, the filesystem will grow without
a real file being stored (ie, visible). It all goes away at reboot.
Also, a runaway application that creates a temp file but does not close
the file will show a lot of usage but without a real file that you can
see.
