Two sorts of semantic networks ["inheritance hierarchy", and "propositional"
semantic networks. In the second, all information including propositions is
represented by nodes].

[...] consider (a) the language L that the system understands, (b) the external
world, W, about which L expresses information, and (c) the language (or model
of W), Lw, that provides the interpretation of L. [...] such a "meaning
representation language" as Lw is involved in two quite separate sorts of
semantic analyses. [First] a semantic interpretation function from utterances
of L to the system's internal knowledge base, Lw [and a function] so that the
system can express itself. [Second] a semantic interpretation of Lw in terms of
