Rational ClearCase NAS Device Support: Theory & Practice

presented by Roger Jarrett from Rational, and David Darby, who copresented also the CM12 session on Samba (Slides)

Especially David, for the second part of the presentation, was very convincing. With 4.2, Rational has certified 3 vendors of Network Attached Storage (aka Net Filers), among which Network Appliance, to host the whole vob (and view) storage (i.e. not only the pools as previously).

The advantages look compelling!

Personal Notes

The changes made in ClearCase 4.2 were made for security or reliability.
In the tests run to simulate real use, the "System test user" features a really heavy user.

Views and vobs storages can be on the same box.

The storage location should be created first with ct mkstgloc...

David told that they have enabled the CIFS oplocks (opportunistic locks), although these are not officially supported by Rational.

The filers operating system uses wafl (write anywhere file layout).

There was a problem bound to udp/tcp and Cisco: see white paper.

It is now possible to create the vob or view from NT on an existing storage location (so far and without a filer, only possible from Unix).

There was also a short NetApp presentation on 24.07 at lunch time (not related to this session).
