Tips and Tricks Using Rational ClearCase on Linux

Slides

Not a very good presentation. Spent much time on other stuff but Linux (their project, their HW environment).

Personal Notes

They were moving from VSS to CC.
Their concern was to get repeatable builds.
They had also experienced data corruption with VSS.
They were interested in the integration with ClearQuest.
They wanted a Unix platform, and selected PC HW because it is cheaper. Also, they wanted some monitoring, but not to pay for Tivoli.
However, Intel has also a commitment to OpenSource.

Their Hardware:

Surprises with the number of instances of nfsd, which gradually increases. There is a white paper on NFS optimzation.

Also implement DNS caching.
Use autofs, and tune!

Their (poorly written) makefiles do serialize the build process, and thus defeat the use of multi-processors.

Experience: 2.4 hangs after 1 hour (there is a patch)

Request for Linux being among tier 1 platforms for Rational.

"kernel oplogs": why did I write that?
