What if we would have to use MS Word without Clearcase?
Contents
- General
- Robustness
- No name that would not be bound to a
version
- What after 9 versions?
- One splits a document...
- No branches (Something is wrong, the document is checked-out,
what do I do?)
- SGML? Http server, scripts to index the documents...
- Confusion between form and contents, duplication of
information. MS Word is no progress over Interleaf!
- Options (one doc for one environment, one for an other...).
They need both to be updated.
- Sorting problems (give me the last versions of these 200
documents, out of these 12000 files with funny names)
- Where is the concept xxx defined? and used? (the
current version only please!)
- Local links to some documents
- I cannot work from home through my modem connection (9600
bauds, text-only).
Kimmo's idea. Scenarios...
How to prevent errors, to detect them, to correct them?
- I could not find the document, I created a new one
- I misspelled the name of a document in a reference
- I forgot to check whether the document was actually free (I was
in a hurry: flight, train, meeting...). I modify directly the
original.
- I didn't remember the naming scheme, and was short of time
This means that there is no syntax to make pointers to document
names (because they are changing) without pointing to versions of
them:
- From source code to specification document
- From specs to reqts
- References to missing documents (not yet written, planed...)
- Local links
No way to name the document anymore...
Well, one renames it... This makes referring
to it even harder!
Or to merge two documents into one?...
One allocates new names... But any relation is definitely lost (?)
I make a new Program Group of my own with soft
links to only the documents I need to know in my context (I am
fed up to searching between the 12000 files). Now, I am
really protected against any change!
