Problems with maintaining 3rd party products in vobs
- the operating system cannot be (fully) versioned: there is an
egg/hen problem (interdependencies in the boot scripts)
- versioning under ClearCase more or less makes our whole system
dependent on license availability, etc.
- shared libraries are a special case
- some other resources can only be found on one system in one
version at a time (sockets, etc.)
- there may be a performance penalty
- tools in our vobs are not found by
locate (but soft links pointing to them in unix directories are).
- /usr/ccs/lbin/cpp being in a vob, CDE cannot load ~/.Xdefaults
- some tools may have host based licenses
