Get rid of garbage in buffers

One often gets garbage in buffers such as *compilation* or *Shell Command Output*

The problem might be with TERM settings or calls to e.g. stty or tabs.

What I suggest is:

• in your .emacs, add: (setenv "TERM" "")
• check your .kshrc (or equivalent) for settings to TERM, and calls to stty, tabs, etc. Just bracket them inside:

        if [ -n "$TERM" ]; then ...; fi
        

You are free to set (and export) TERM to whatever you wish in your .profile (or equivalent). The reason one often sets it in .kshrc is that .profile is not run by remsh (but it is run by rlogin). However, TERM is usually set by the various terminals (e.g. xterm).
